چکیده

Abstract In this study, we present the results of an inversion ionospheric phase scintillation data to characterize plasma density irregularity parameters for structures associated with a series Polar Cap Patches. The parameter estimates obtained during suggests that irregularities Patches are predominantly composed moderately elongated electron rods aligned earth's magnetic field which in some instances interbedded within sheet and wing like structures. Analysis spatial temporal distribution axial ratio (AXRs), ratios elongation parallel perpendicular field, indicates measured indices increase roughly proportionally AXR values but remain constant wings sheets. These findings indicate while sheets can produce fluctuations, it is apparent existence mark occurrence processes lead formation field‐aligned scintillations most significant.

ESR mapping of polar-cap patches in the dark cusp

[1] We present the first ever measurement of the full thermal plasma properties, of an ionospheric patch in full darkness in the noon region where patches are believed to form. Further these data present the first experimental evidence for the Lockwood and Carlson class of mechanisms for forming patches by plasma injection. These data were possible only because of a new measurement capability w...

Solar illumination control of ionospheric outflow above polar cap arcs

Wemeasure the flux density, composition, and energy of outflowing ions above the polar cap, accelerated by quasi-static electric fields parallel to the magnetic field and associated with polar cap arcs, using Cluster. Mapping the spacecraft position to its ionospheric foot point, we analyze the dependence of these parameters on the solar zenith angle (SZA). We find a clear transition at SZA bet...

A new method to reconstruct the ionospheric convection patterns in the polar cap

A new method to reconstruct the instantaneous convection pattern in the Earth's polar ionosphere is suggested. Plasma convection in the polar cap ionosphere is described as a hydrodynamic incompressible ̄ow. This description is valid in the region where the electric currents are ®eld aligned (and hence, the Lorentz body force vanishes). The problem becomes two-dimensional, and may be described ...

Ground-based observations of the auroral zone and polar cap ionospheric responses to dayside transient reconnection

Observations from the EISCAT VHF incoherent scatter radar system in northern Norway, during a run of the common programme CP-4, reveal a series of polewardpropagating F-region electron density enhancements in the pre-noon sector on 23 November 1999. These plasma density features, which are observed under conditions of a strongly southward interplanetary magnetic field, exhibit a recurrence rate...
